Art Director

Are you a visual mastermind? Do you consider yourself to be a Gandalf-like figure to a large fellowship of artistic adventurers? This role is about leading the various teams responsible for creating brilliant, well-thought out, beautiful game assets for a wide variety of uses. It’s about using light, perspective, and color to evoke a sense of awe, mystery, or excitement. It’s about creating a sense of mood, depth, flavor, and character in even the simplest of assets. But most of’s about using imaaaaaaaaaagination. You must lead this Art Fellowship to success!

Splinterlands is seeking a passionate creative leader who wants to inspire and mentor their team to victory! Our culture is one of collaboration, team work, positivity, and a love for gaming. Our new Art Director should be able to hit the ground running in terms of team building, organization, and overall ability to wear as many hats as possible to grow the team!

As an Art Director, you will be responsible for leading the conceptualizing, designing, and optimizing of a broad range of graphics in different themes and styles. You will be collaborating with the Creative Director, Product Managers, Art Leads, and UI/UX Designers to produce pixel-perfect assets within the necessary time frames. In addition, you may need to step in to prepare and organize assets for animation or manipulation as needed.

You should have a high level of mastery with Game Assets design and understand how to properly export for both web and mobile. As an Art director, leadership and team building skills are essential. Being able to take responsibility, and push the art department forward are also very important. You should have a strong eye for dynamic perspective and how to create a sense of drama. You should also understand how to maintain a sense of strong layer management. More importantly, you should be capable of cranking out kick@$$, polished, eye-popping digital art…then guiding other artists to do the same.

Things You’ll Do:

  • Organize Concepts and Artwork for Characters, Items, Effects, or Environmental assets
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Creative Director and the Leadership team for the overall Artistic vision for the game
  • Create, Strategize, and improve efficient art & design pipelines and tooling for all Art Departments
  • Strategize Studio recruitment and Outsourcing
  • Review Feedback and Revise as necessary
  • Lead conversation with Animators to ensure native files are properly prepared
  • Lead Optimization of exports for desired front-end interface

Things You Need:

  • At least 7 years professional 2D Game Art experience
  • Formal Gaming industry experience
  • At least 2 years of Leadership and teambuilding experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in managing an art department pipeline
  • At least 3 years of experience in 3D game art
  • Experience in overseeing art outsourcing
  • Expert with almost all Adobe software programs
  • High level of experience with other 2D design applications (Affinity, Procreate, Clip Studio, etc)
  • Strong understanding of vector and raster artwork and how they are best utilized
  • Amazing Portfolio
  • Strong understanding of Brand strategy
  • Strong understanding Typography
